Mt Egmont, also known as Mount Tarankaki is New Zealand’s most perfectly formed volcano. If you’ve only got a day to explore Egmont National Park then the Pouakai Crossing covers all the highlights. At 18.4km the full one day hike looks over Taranaki’s countryside and even features views all the way up to Mount Ruapehu. From the lava columns of the Diefennbach Cliffs to the red water of Kokowai Stream, you will eventually end up at the famous tarns. So still that they create a surreal mirror like reflection.
